Description

While it’s easy to enjoy Oban 14 mindlessly and as a “background whisky,” which I normally gravitate toward, I like that it has a little more depth to its character that can be appreciated if given enough attention. On the nose: There is an initial puff of wax that fades immediately and turns into caramel sauce and bubble gum.

The tiny lamp glass-shaped copper pot stills that make Oban's Scotch are among the smallest in Scotland, and the liquor they distil is slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs outside among the rooftops, exposed to the salted sea air, bringing a distinct depth of flavour said to go very well with salted caramel. I had the pleasure of going to the Oban distillery a few years ago and it offered a great tour and insight into the whisky and it’s history. Oban 14 Year Old is a superb combination of rich sweetness and smoky dryness with fruity notes of oranges, pears and dried figs, plus hints of sea-salt and peat smoke notes.Oban Distillery is both one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and one of the smallest with just two pot stills. This “dustiness” manifests in slightly various ways depending on the whisky; when it comes to this one, it leans more toward stale chocolate chip cookies.

The finish is quick and woody, with a similar aftertastes that you get from having a bowl of skin-on red grapes. For those unfamiliar with what it’s like, think of it as similar to college but being more specialized. It opens with a light, heathery, fruity and zesty sets of smells amongst the initial alcoholic burn.Once that settles though that zesty and citrusy set of flavours is joined by a real heather honey sweetness, a good bodied malt and just a little smoke. Pre-dating the town of Oban, it was originally established in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. S. Some say it’s because it is easy to pronounce (though having said that, remember it’s ‘OH-bin’ and not ‘O’Bahn’).

Background: Along the shores of Lorn lies a record of man far more ancient than that of any city in the land. Tasting Notes: Oban has a sweet peated nose with hints of burnt heather carried through to the palate with just a touch of creaminess. MR FILBERTS Sweet Chilli Rice Crackers 40g - Mr Filbert's spicy chilli rice crackers are seasoned lavishly with warm chillies and a good pinch of spice for a crunchy savoury snack. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.Oban is a genuinely segregated refinery, roosted on the westernedge of the Scottish terrain at the extremely top of the Kintyre promontory. It is distilled from lightly-peated malt, aged in refill ex-Bourbon casks, chill-filtered, and bottled at 43% strength. It underwent a refurbishment in the 1890s and there has been little change to the present buildings since then. First time I tried this scotch whisky was in March 2021, and I never have much acquired the taste for scotch, as I like fine bourbons.

The spirit has been matured in ex-bourbon refill American oak hogshead casks and is captured at 43% ABV.

Inoffensive and smooth, not improved with a drop of water, but some pleasant notes of malt and bitter orange.
