He weaves a plot as ancient as it is modern, with family, love, intrigue, betrayal, debilitating illness, and the triste of loss. Sooner or later, the gambler will lose his entire float, the losses from which will balance out the modest winnings.

The novel is set in the late 19th and early 20th century, focusing on Brodie Moncur, a Scottish piano tuner. His six-hour Cold War spy thriller, Spy City (Miramax, ZDF) was broadcast and streaed internationally at the end of 2020. This rich, lovely novel offers a breathtaking tour of fin-de-siècle Scotland, France and Russia seen through the myopic eyes of Brodie Moncur, a renowned Scottish piano tuner. I liked little snippets such as that although Brodie became fluent in French, it was owing to sheer hard work – he never mastered Russian or German, so clearly wasn’t a natural linguist – somehow this minor detail interspersed in the story made him more real. On the surface Love Is Blind has all the hallmarks of a slow-burning thriller—the event-packed story of a single decade in Brodie’s life .

In his latest novel, Love Is Blind – his 15th – William Boyd has pulled off an audaciously cunning trick, a literary bait and switch that both delights and surprises. The apparent love between them seemed false and cumbersome, and it was always about when Brodie could get his next sex session. Moving from Paris to St Petersburg to Edinburgh and back again, Brodie's love for Lika and its dangerous consequences pursue him around Europe and beyond, during an era of overwhelming change as the nineteenth century becomes the twentieth.

Brodie’s entrepreneurial flair is soon recognized by the head of the company, who sends him to run their Paris branch and expand their business there. His wife is editor-at-large of Harper's Bazaar magazine, and they currently spend about thirty to forty days a year in the US. Set at the turn of the 19th century, it is a period piece drawing the life of a Scot, Brodie Moncur. They are pursued in a cat-and-mouse chase across Europe, and eventually to India, that leaves the reader anxiously turning the pages, hoping the unlikely hero makes it out alive.
