Description

Love him or hate him, Charles Bukowski was a bitter, drunken asshole with a gift for putting onto paper all the ugliness and baseness hiding in the human heart. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp (1994).

This particular collection couldn’t be more fitting to find these notes written years earlier (I have a few other books where we both wrote notes to each other, such as Thus Spoke Zarathustra which we were both reading at the same time while he was our ‘guy on couch’ at an old apartment), both with Bukowski’s discussions of loneliness, but as it was indicative of my current state at that time. Also like a setting sun, people like this aren’t something you can hang around long or you will get hurt (or loose your vision if you stare at the sun too long! Kind of makes you wonder what it would have been like - the writing of the later years without the financial security. It is marked by an emphasis on the ordinary lives of poor Americans, the act of writing, alcohol, relationships with women and the drudgery of work.Well, with a title like this, you know you’re not going to be disappointed – this collection of Bukowski poetry brings all of the usual to the table, and it’s as good a book as any to start with if you’re new to his work. It features spoken word tracks that are influenced by various electronic music genres, such as ambient, techno and trip hop, as well as "straight-on rock songs. oh yeah you also take an unreasonable amount of shits a day (or at least you talk about it continuously).

Alternating between tough and gentle, sensitive and gritty, Bukowski lays bare the myriad facets of love—its selfishness and its narcissism, its randomness, its mystery and its misery, and, ultimately, its true joyfulness, endurance, and redemptive power. I recently started getting back in to poetry after reading Words of Marc D Brown: The Poetry Collection (which was brilliant! Number 3 of 5 presentation copies, marked as such on the rear colophon; signed by Charles Bukowski and with an original painting by him bound in. Near Fine with a faint lean to the binding, light tanning to contents with a faint stain to the fore edge and slight darkening to the inner front hinge at the top.It was like having a conversation across 3 years time with an old friend, the type of friend that is more like a brother. It’s just a little while, and then it burns away… Love is a fog that burns with the first daylight of reality. His first book of poetry was published in 1959; he went on to publish more than forty-five books of poetry and prose, including Pulp (1994), Screams from the Balcony (1993), and The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992).

I mean, compared to something like the fucking DaVinci Code (that should be the title; The Fucking DaVinci Code), which has sold 40 million copies. I’m willing to bet much of what he says in the anthology you likely heard from your Uncle Butch when he had a few too many at a family event. you said you had a crying bench and it was by a bridge and the bridge was over the river and you sat on the crying bench every night and wept for the lovers who had hurt and forgotten you.For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. Still, those moments of beauty are worth coming back for, and I can’t express enough how cool it was to find the notes from my friend. He is, at best, a rude misogynist, but under the layers of dysphemism, we see a heart drowning in sorrow (and booze). Most people, especially teenagers, chase after love like its something they need but instead it's ego-centric desire and lust.
