When he opts out of a family weekend trip, he never guesses that he is about to take a terrifying journey into darkness. Dervish convinces an extremely reluctant Grubbs, who is still haunted by nightmares, to take her place.Indeed, the only person that Lord Loss actually hates is Grubbs Grady, who not only humiliated him but also ruined chess for him, though the game still provides him with fond, nostalgic memories despite his unwillingness to continue playing it.

This was done in a really bold way as Shan completely focused on establishing these new characters in later books, with Erikson-esque departures from the main storyline. Other interests include long walks, watching soccer (he's a Tottenham Hotspur and Ireland fan), listening to pop and rock music, theatre, worldwide travel, sampling the delights of both gourmet cuisine and finger-licking junk food, and dreaming up new ways to terrify his readers! Lord Loss is the first novel in the Demonata series written by best-selling teenage horror author Darren Shan. Instead of having legs, strips of bloody flesh hang from the edge of stumps where his feet would normally be, so he moves about by levitating. He's put in a mental hospital because he keeps saying that demons killed his family, which the doctors think isn't true.

While confronting Lord Loss, Dervish is constantly distracted from his chess match as Grubbs is unable to fight off the two familiars. Turning to look he sees Dervish, with his senses regained, holding a tin of paint and a woollen scarf.

Meera Flame, a friend of Dervish, who is knocked out while trying to restrain a transformed Bill-E, was supposed to help battle the demons. Once they're hooked, kids tend to rip into the flesh of these books, quickly draining them of their life blood. His speech pattern is characterised by a tone of immense sadness, coupled with the use of quite a sophisticated vocabulary; he rarely uses abbreviations, and always addresses characters by their fulls names as opposed to nicknames. A big film buff, with a collection of more than four thousand movies at home, Darren also reads lots of comics and books, and likes to study and collect original artwork, especially comic art and impressionist and post-impressionist art. Lord Loss kills people in the cruelest ways he can think of; in Bec he has the zombies of Orna's own children eat her alive all for his entertainment. From here, life is never the same but Grubbs finds that there is magic that can fight and defeat the demons, if not Lord Loss himself.

Darren Shan is really good at writing mentor relationships where the main character gets a second father. He enjoyed his first taste of literary success at fifteen, as a runner-up in a television script-writing competition for RTE in Ireland, with a dark comedy script titled A Day in the Morgue. He can also travel between the Demonata's world and Earth, which no other Demon Master has accomplished without using a tunnel (though, Lord Loss is only able to do so because he once was a piece of the Kah-Gash). Then the story really starts to kick off and it even went places I totally didn’t see coming which was an absolute joy. I must say, I do still find that my favorite of Darren Shan's series is The Darren Shan Saga, but only one book in it would be a little biased of me to be saying this.Grubbs narrowly escapes death, but suffers from PTSD and is hospitalised due to his poor mental state. I went into this book without really knowing what it was about and enjoyed the suspense so I will tell no more about it.
