Not one main character in this book, with all of his/her "superior" education, could communicate effectively or at least like an adult, which was the most annoying character flaw for me. Scarlett is young and beautiful, and uses her beauty and The Tits, which are her main asset, to get exactly what she wants from the punters. Our connection to Iris may be intimate, but it also feels stale and grey given how lifeless she herself feels. Sir Michael Caine knows a thing or two about gangs: whether that’s joining one as a kid, or playing them in movies for over 50 years. We can roll our eyes and state "no one would be crazy enough to do that", but some are so maddened by their dull day-to-day existence that I strongly believe some would love the opportunity and woud at least consider it.

The reader learns that one tragic event dissolved the bond between Scott and Charles, Charles and his ex-girlfriend, Sylvie and her (now deceased) husband, as well as the boys and their (now deceased) father. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events. I felt like nothing was coming to play because the story was all over the place and so many smaller issues were being discussed rather then that main issue at hand. The next day you stay in bed until the afternoon, scrolling through your social media feeds and wondering why everyone else seems to be achieving so much.We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, traditions and living cultures; and we pay our respects to Elders past and present.

The only character I did empathise with a little was Iris, but simply due to the fact she is the character the reader is given the most time with so naturally a deeper connection is achieved. But despite working in the same club and sharing a flat, they couldn't be more different: Tiggy speaks posh and receives a cheque from her father every month, believes in love, wants nothing but to be loved, can't stop grieving for her mother who left the family when Tiggy was fourteen and is waiting for her older, married lover (who used to be her teacher in a boarding school) to leave his wife. I also don't like story lines where characters quit one thing in life and go on to another so easily-difficult to believe.

There is no interaction, no engagement, no scrolling, no desolate envy of other people's lives, no addiction to 'likes'- that bitter-sweet dopamine whisper, 'I see you. After a week-long journey “via an underwater wormhole in the Pacific”, claustrophobia grows in the sealed hub that becomes home to Iris and her fellow cast members, with a measure of tension in the question of who will be next to crack from boredom and try their luck in the unbreathable atmosphere outside. In the second part of the novel the pace does move a little quicker with changes happening within each of the characters lives.
