As the head of the team, protagonist Claire Kovalik decides to investigate, leading her crew of Voller, Kane, Lourdes, and Nysus onto the ghost ship. She was unreliable and unlikable in all the ways that I enjoy most, and I loved the depictions of her PTSD and social anxiety (the latter of which hit very close to home! Barnes ably conjures the kind of haunting setting and atmosphere required for this Event Horizon-esque novel… Recommended for fans of claustrophobic space horror. Eventually, I’d have to decide between freezing to death or suffocating as my suit ran out of juice, but it would be my choice. And when your synopsis touts something as irresistible as “Titanic meets The Shining” then heck yeah, my expectations are going to be somewhere in the stratosphere.

All her life Violet has grappled with her ability to sense the echoes of those who have been murdered and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. I like SciFy horror usually (horror is one of those genres I can sometimes handle but other times is just too much for me) and this book is asking to be put on my TBR. I feel that all these characters weren’t really developed to make a reader care for what ultimately happens to them as the story progresses. Where I struggled with the book was in the character department, especially the main character of Claire Kovalik. But then again, Voller excels at stating the obvious and being exceptionally annoying while doing so.

If you’re been following me for a while, you’ll have noticed there is never any horror reviews on this blog. In short, the vast majority of this book is self-deprecating internal monologues by a character that hates herself so much you as a reader can’t possibly help but feel the same. My choice out here among the stars, the distant glimmering planets, and the absolute silence of space. Max informs Claire that Verux is sending himself, Reed, and Claire to investigate the Aurora and retrieve the bodies. They discover the very first space luxury liner, the Aurora, which has been lost for over twenty years.

to be fair, it's a pretty exciting opportunity: the discovery of The Aurora; a luxury spacecraft that went missing on its maiden voyage twenty years ago carrying hundreds of passengers—the rich, the famous, and the infamous—whose disappearance became the stuff of legend, speculation, a bermuda-triangle-grade mysteeeeerious phenomenon, and here it is—the chance to make history, solve the mystery, or—for the less noble crew members—fill their pockets with bling. Claire Kovalik is days away from being unemployed—made obsolete—when her beacon repair crew picks up a strange distress signal. What I Liked: The climax is spectacular and the saving grace to this novel it was written very well.

Meanwhile, Claire struggles to keep a hold on her sanity as her past, as a survivor of another awful space catastrophe in which her mother died and she followed the ghost of her best friend comes back with a vengeance and threatens to incapacitate her. Dead Silence is a superb hybrid horror novel that brings together science fiction, extreme psychological horror with a healthy dose of gore, and elements of Gothic fiction as the Aurora quickly morphs into something akin to an abandoned haunted mansion full of mysteries and wandering ghosts. As a result though, her past affects every decision she makes now, and as Team Leader almost everything is her decision. Claire further tells them that her crew had begun to experience these same effects, leading to Voller killing himself. It’s definitely plot focused and while we do get to know about Claire’s past, I never felt close to her, and she often annoyed me.

p>The data controller is Headline Publishing Group Limited. For some it'll mean new opportunities, but for the team lead, Claire Kovalik, it'll mean a desk job.
