Glad there is also an afterword on consent, because it may also empower readers to created firm boundaries to protect themselves and their well being. honestly i kind of just read this for the Jacqueline Wilson primary school vibes and i wasn’t disappointed in that aspect because her writing style has not changed or developed whatsoever. The narrative totally draws you in and the storyline keeps you guessing where life will take Laura and Kathleen. Watching Laura and her friend Nina navigate to teenage hood and become interested in sex, boys and ‘growing up’ (well, in Nina’s case anyway), and I honestly can’t believe how quickly I eagerly devoured this book.

Laura and Nina’s friendship begins to falter in the next few months as Laura realises how controlling her friend is. Laura’s life really illustrates the dangers of not explaining things to your child in an age-appropriate manner (her parents didn’t explain anything) but expecting them to be “chaste”. Laura comes across all sorts of girls here and they all share their tales and deal with the harsh opinions of older women and the realities of what having a baby this young can mean. So how would I sun this up … honest , gut wrenching yet sweet at times , emotional and heartbreaking! One fantastic addition since the days when I was a YA were some notes from the author detailing how the ‘adult’ themes in the book and the access to help available . A story of family, adoption, consent, growing up, sex education, friendship and standing up for yourself. Laura often stays for dinner at the Bertrams which is full of laughter, plenty of food fit for a restaurant, and a delicious pudding for afters.

She lived in a place where there wasn’t much hope and perhaps, she developed much more than I’ve given her grace for. Aspirations to keep up with a wealthy friend are agonizing, and result in a huge mistake that she doesn't even realise she's making. The story gripped me and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Laura went through without having to think too hard. Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. I’m not sure if the author is now writing for a different type of teenager than 20 years ago or if I am reading her book as a person who has experienced things I never expected 20 years ago but this did not feel like a ‘teen read’.Wilson mi ha sempre stupito per la delicatezza con cui scriveva di certi argomenti in libri che erano per ragazzine intorno ai dieci, dodici anni. i started reading it this afternoon and when i say it was unputdownable i literally mean that i read for 3 hours straight and finished it. Sheltered by her overprotective parents and eager to fit in with new best friend Nina and appear more grown up, you can see how things spiral out of control. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children’s Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children’s Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame.
