I was asked to read this book by children aged 3 - 4, who found the story very funny due to Oliver only liking chips to eat.

Along the way he discovers many other types of vegetables and learns that he likes more than just French fries. This is a great book to link with maths as it rehearses the days of the week and the illustrations offer many opportunities for counting and working out how many vegetables. I recommend this book to young children as it is a new, funny alternative to approach the subject of healthy eating, and the pictures will allow children to be inspired as a result of it. Our Oliver's Vegetables story sequencing resource is great for making sure children fully comprehend the story and can also be a great help when they're writing their own creative stories. This lesson plan provides activity ideas to accompany the delightful children’s book Oliver’s Vegetablesby Vivian French. This video link is provided to help an adult assess the book's suitability for a child's situation before purchasing it. During each discovery, the children I was with enjoyed a discussion about their favourite foods and whether they liked or disliked the vegetable Oliver was trying. We have enjoyed printing with vegetables and paint to create beautiful pictures, as well as scrubbing and washing vegetables in preparation to make vegetable soup. The answer is to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day not the same thing over and over again just like Oliver!

If you are concerned about the health and wellbeing of yourself or children in your care, you should always consult an appropriate healthcare professional.Slightly on the minus side - speaking only as an adult here - I used to feel slightly riled by the suggestion that a child could be so easily conned into eating vegetables. This overall should show children the benefits of trying new foods and the importance of eating a healthy diet. Bring in a couple of potted plant to provide live samples of each part ,or take a walk in the classroom garden or schoolyard and identify roots, stems, leaves, and flowers on plants you find outside. This popular picture book tells the story of fussy eater Oliver, who will not eat anything but chips. We have an array of resources and activities that go wonderfully in conjunction with the brilliant storybook.
