This picture book, in which a girl helps her grandfather embrace life again following the death of Gramps, may well aid young readers in understanding others' grief. That child is inspired to help Grandad dust off the old camper/bus in the garage, give it a new blue stripe, change a tire, and start out for new adventures. Harry Woodgate (they/them) is a multi-award-winning author and illustrator, whose debut picture book Grandad’s Camper won the British Book Awards Nibbie for Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize, and named as an ALA Stonewall Honor Book.

This beautiful picture book honors love and reminds us not only to remember those we have lost, but to celebrate them. I've worked with publishers including Penguin Random House, Little Tiger Group, Andersen Press, Little Bee Books and HarperCollins, and also on freelance projects with clients such as the Sunday Times, The Washington Post and Google. He describes their first holiday in Gramps' camper van, and how Gramps told him he wanted them to see all the wonderful things in the world together. A long time ago, Grandad and Gramps spent many happy days travelling the world together in a camper van. It was inspired by their university dissertation, which revealed a lack of representation for older LGBTQIA+ characters in children’s books.

VERDICT For the hope for new adventures, and the glimpse of intergenerational kindness and understanding, this lovely book should be on every shelf. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It is also a story that deals with grief and the importance of sharing memories about cherished people who have passed. Still, there is a wholesome gentility to every page, of enjoying every minute, even in memory, of growing sweet cherries in the garden, and of filling a home with mementos and stories.

The children begin the sequence of learning by exploring a dusty memory box from the attic which contains objects linked to Grandad’s memories of his time in the campervan with Gramps. An effective tool for teaching empathy, and the intergenerational bond at the story's center is a heartstrings puller. Following this, children create expanded noun phrases to enhance their descriptive writing and use these to support them in writing poetry about an object which holds a special memory to them.
