Such additions seem to even out the heat distribution and along with a reliable thermometer make the oven a useable item. After some experiments we found baking on the top shelf produces better results (of course only if the space is sufficient). Adding a small baking stone to the bottom of the inside helps it to heat evenly and retain heat longer.

And since space is always an issue we don’t want to add something that we would barely use… for now.

It is also important to remove the oven from on top of the burner before extinguishing the flame when using on a gasoline or kero stove, or the residual unburnt vapors are liable to taint the baked goods. We sought a cooking lesson from local friends and learned making the proper flour isn’t as evident as it looks. We watched vendors prepare them in their street stall and it looked easy enough: sieve the tapioca, sprinkle a handful of the flour in a hot, dry frying pan, top it with sweet or salty toppings, and there you go. One of our hosts in India gave us a cooking lesson and we subsequently baked fresh chapattis on a daily basis. I'd not use one over a canister stove due to potential overheating the butane canister but I have used them over a Nova and a 413G Coleman twin burner.

Luckily the rack slots provide a good place to pass a couple of pieces of fencing wire or similar through to make another support with just. The aren't collapseable like the Coleman oven but they are twin skinned so the temperature is more controllable. Thermometer on door is not calibrated, but there’s an adjustment screw on the back of the door, so will have a go at adjusting next time. Most folks put some sort of heat diffusing material in the bottom such as a piece of plate steel, a cast iron griddle or even a pizza stone.

So, as you might expect since it's of metal and not double-skinned, the oven radiates (wastes) a lot of heat and even a moderate amount of insulation (aluminium foil works fine) can reduce the burner power requirement substantially. When there is wind we bake inside the Land Cruiser, putting the stove on a wooden cutting board to protect the storage compartment lid from the heat. Cut into the shape of an inverted T, it covers the top and sides with the leg of the T folding over the back.

A simple single burner will work for this oven, but I would use a wind guard with the set up to ensure even and steady heat. The second point to make is that the temperature maxed out at 200°C in those conditions and that's on one of the most powerful burners around.
