Description

Sometimes it’s nice to pick up a children’s book such as The Clockwork Crow, which can be enjoyed by adults too, and just blaze through it, as you don’t want to stop once you start. Generally, this is true; the orphan or downtrodden child who suffers adverse situations, faces the situation head on through this period of growth, comes out on top. The trilogy is a mix of magic and folklore, set in Victorian Wales, telling the story of the orphan Seren Rhys and herb adventures with the tetchy, brilliant and powerful Clockwork Crow. An acclaimed novelist and poet, she has written many fantasy books for young people, including The Oracle Prophecy series, Corbenic, Darkhenge, The Snow-Walker Trilogy, Darkwater Hall, and The Relic Master series. Other settings were full of gentle strangeness that made me close my eyes to try and imagine myself within them.

Catherine was Wales’ first Young People's Laureate (2011-2013) and has won a number of awards for her work. I was looking for some wintery magic when I picked up this book and couldn't pass up the steampunk aspects of the clockwork crow. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. The story is rich with the sense of old magic and fairytale, yet a totally original and particular bit of storytelling. Together with this unreliable and truculent ally, Seren sets out to unravel the mystery of what has happened at Plas-y-Fran and where Tomos has disappeared to.

Wedi’i harfogi ag aderyn sy’n siarad ond nad ydyw, o bosib, yn dweud y gwir; glôb eira hudol, a’i dewrder anorchfygol hi ei hun, cychwynna Seren ar daith beryglus ganol nos i fyd cyfareddol o eira a sêr er mwyn dod â hapusrwydd yn ôl i Blas-y-Frân.

This is also historical fiction as it's set in the days of trains, horse drawn carriages and candles.

Her futuristic novel Incarceron was published to widespread praise in 2007, winning the Mythopoeic Society of America's Children's Fiction Award and selected by The Times as its Children's Book of the Year. Set in Victorian Britain, Seren Rhys is an orphan being sent to live with her Godfather in a remote house in Wales.

Roachie's Reviews 'A spellbinding tale glistening with magic and mystery that completely enchanted me. It's a Gothic Christmas story for elementary grade about a Victorian-era orphan with a steam-punk talking crow who has to rescue a random stranger from the Welsh fae who have kidnapped him. Family Book Worms 'I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get lost in a world of magic, mystery, and adventure.

The mystery is creepy, but there are clues all around Seren, she just needs to open her eyes and follow them. When orphaned Seren Rees is given a mysterious package by a strange and frightened man on her way to her new home, she reluctantly takes it with her. The Candleman won the Welsh Books Council's Tir Na n'Og Prize and Catherine was also shortlisted for the remarkable Corbenic, a modern re-inventing of the Grail legend. What follows is a story of revolution and adventure, about standing up for the things you love and fighting back.
