Bill, a man who only has stolen things from his bed to his marmalade, is shocked to find he has stolen a baby!

However the really lovely thing is how he is a reformed character by the end of the story so no wrong messages being sent about stealing. And of course to give up their burgling ways - clearly a story for children has to have a moral ending! The iconic images of swarthy Bill clutching his swag bag will stick fast in the mind, while everyone will breathe a sigh of relief as he renounces his wicked ways and turns over a new leaf!before you begin to read, get a "feel" for the book by looking at the cover, front and back and talking about it.

These are the sorts of books I would actively keep out of my (at the time of writing this, hypothetical) children's library because it is subtly teaching them a lesson that appears benign but isn't actually good for people that I know I grew up with and have been trying to unlearn since I was a child. This book really has quite an intricate plot for a picture book - I'm pretty sure I would have loved it if it had been around when I was a kid. S. it was published by Viking Press in 1979 as Each Peach Pear Plum: an "I Spy" story; the national library catalogue summary explains, "Rhymed text and illustrations invite the reader to play 'I spy' with a variety of Mother Goose and other folklore characters. The Ahlberg's delightful story has it all: adventure; romance; felonies galore; remorse; restitution and a happy ending. She just left him on the door step while she was busy burgling and the next thing she knew, he'd gone.I don't remember Burglar Bill being a Londoner when I read it as a kid, but I found myself doing a dodgy Ray Winstone impersonation here.

As Author’s I really love Janet and Allan Ahlberg especially their poetry writing such as, ‘Please Mrs Butler’ and the ‘Happy Families’ volumes.

The story depicts thieves as having a moral conscience only with regards to infants; but anything of monetary or materialistic value is game.
